What is Undergraduate Research?

Undergraduate research in higher education involve students actively engaging in scientific or creative projects, often guided by faculty mentors, to gain hands-on experience, contribute new knowledge, and develop critical thinking and research skills in their field of study.

The Undergraduate Research and Outreach Office works to increase students' participation in research, scholarship, and creative inquiry, emphasizing increasing access and opportunity for students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). We foster collaborative partnerships with industry stakeholders and national support groups and engage with the local and regional community in strategic initiatives that benefit society. We mentor, advocate for, and connect students to undergraduate research opportunities on campus, off campus, and with industry partners.

Our office supports programs that cultivate welcoming environments where everyone feels valued and recognized. We emphasize High-Impact Practices (HIPS) that enhance students' engagement, retention, and graduation rates in higher education. To this end, we actively promote and invest in undergraduate research experiences. These opportunities allow students to gain a deeper understanding of their field, build career readiness, and develop independent thinking skills. Additionally, participating in research distinguishes students in competitive job markets and graduate school applications.

Why Get Involved?

Undergraduate Research provides opportunities to prepare students for future careers by gaining meaningful skills through hands-on internships in a mentored investigation that seeks to make a scholarly contribution to knowledge. Our students can participate in paid research opportunities during the school year or in the summer months. These hands-on learning experiences give students a meaningful workforce and advanced skills that help them be more competitive in obtaining industry jobs and applying to professional school or graduate school.
